I’ve previously admitted that Sonic Generations is a great game. It’s got to have been for it to have solidified my interest in the series. The celebration game of everything Sonic the Hedgehog, with a wide variety of music tracks and a number of favourite levels. One thing I wish it had done, though, was use more. Sure, the adage that more doesn’t equal better, but Generations… could have used more. I’ve talked before how there didn’t feel like there was much interaction with the worlds or characters (for any character not a Sonic or Tails, anyway), and I wished there had been. Here, then, I aim to present an idea on how it could have been expanded. More levels and more interaction between characters and the worlds. Unlike with the Redesigned Galar concept, I won’t be sticking to as strict a guideline. By providing expansion, it needs more room to do so. One of the first things to do is increase the number of levels. Each game represented would have two levels and a boss. The structure of how these play out would be each level has a Classic and Modern act, of which you’d choose one for the first of a game. The next level would then automatically use the choice you didn’t select. With the two levels complete, the boss would then be played. These bosses would use both Sonics, swapping between the two after each hit on the boss. Since with this expanded concept Classic would be fully 2D and Modern fully 3D, it allows two perspectives on each fight, giving a viewpoint that hasn’t been explored before depending on which game those fights were originally from. The bosses would also play out like regular levels, technically making it three per game. By having three levels, it allows mini stories to happen while still keeping focus on the overall narrative of the game. Sonic 1 would be where everything starts, with the Classic and Modern counterparts of Sonic and Tails getting used to being together as they chase down Classic Eggman. Meanwhile, Adventure 2’s story would feature Shadow as he tries his own method of restoring the world – thinking he needs to take out one of the Sonics to do so. The overall narrative would still be the same, if slightly different. While Eggman does want to team up with his past self, it’s purely for the reason so his past self can see the destruction of Sonic. By defeating Sonic’s Classic counterpart, Eggman believes that will wipe Modern from existence, and thus give him a free pass at finally conquering the world. Most of the story is based upon this, with scenarios such as Metal Sonic luring the Sonics into a trap and using Amy as bait during the Sonic 2 story (which has a recreation of the boss from Sonic CD), the Chaotix investigating a strange energy reading during the Sonic Heroes story, and Blaze protecting the Wisps from Eggman in the Sonic Colours story. The interaction between Sonic and his friends is expanded on through having these story segments, with the same also happening in the final boss against the Time Eater. Rather than just being cheerleaders, they would play their part in using their own abilities to protect the two Sonics once they get knocked out. Once the Chaos Emeralds have done their thing and the Sonics have transformed into their Super forms, the final fight begins, which is again a proper level. With the flying ability being Super provides, the level will be tailored to that unlimited flight. Again, there would be 2D and 3D sections for Classic and Modern to get through, until the final hit where both come together. With that final boss complete, the acts that you hadn’t selected within levels would now open, allowing players to access to levels they hadn’t played before. Bonus race challenges would also be open, with one being against the other Sonic and the other against the friend within that game. The White Space would still be a fully 2D area, but would come in two parts. The first part would be the main hub, where access to each of the stories would be. The second part would be each individual story hub, which would create a small (at first greyscale) rendition of the world created from the levels featured as part of that game.
Obviously, this is only a small idea of how to expand the game. I haven’t dived into the details of which levels I’d choose and how I’d use the characters in terms of abilities and deeper story significance. This is purely to get some thoughts out regarding how I would have gone about creating Generations. But how would you have gone about creating Sonic Generations? Would you have gone a different way, or are you thinking along the same lines as me? Give a comment down below with your thoughts.
